Contract,  Corporate & Industry Research

With  more than 200 labor agreements in a variety of industries, Local 688's  staff office is a busy place. Each day business representatives and negotiating  committees prepare for negotiations. Your Research and Education Department  often helps prepare for negotiations by compiling company and industry  analyses, contract comparisons, corporate structures, labor relations  histories, etc. The Department also researches non-union companies and  union-busting law firms to prepare for tough organizing campaigns. The  bottom line is that Local 688 members are prepared to tackle any challenge,  whether it is negotiations or organizing a workplace.

A  History of Progressive, Democratic Trade Unionism with an Eye for the  Future.
Two major labor organizations composed the early history of your union.  One group, the St. Louis warehouse unit of the Congress of Industrial  Organizations (CIO) grew from historic, mass organizing drives in 1937;  the other, Teamsters Local 688, was chartered as a warehouse affiliate  of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1941.

The  two unions were rivals until 1949, when both organizations merged and  Harold Gibbons became the leader of the union, chartered as an affiliate  of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. The youngest of twenty-three  children, Gibbons began his union activism during the Great Depression  as an organizer for the American Federation of Teachers. In 1937, Gibbons  began leading organizing campaigns as an official with the CIO in Chicago  and was then assigned as Regional Organizer for the Textile Workers Union  in Louisville, Kentucky. After four years in Kentucky, Gibbons became  leader of St. Louis' struggling warehouse unions.

Gibbons  soon became a locally and nationally recognized labor leader for pioneering  labor activism based on democratic, progressive unionism. Included among  the many innovative programs developed by Gibbons and the membership are  the Labor Health Institute (LHI), the Teamster Health & Medical Camp  in Pevely and the Council House high-rise apartments for senior citizens.  Gibbons also developed one of the best steward education programs in the  country. Widely considered to be the "father" of Local 688,  Gibbons served as Teamsters Joint Council 13 President, Missouri-Kansas  Conference of Teamsters President, Director of the Central Conference  of Teamsters and International Vice President. He served as IBT General  President James R. Hoffa's Executive Assistant from 1957 to 1963.

While  Gibbons was an important figure in the development of Local 688, he relied  upon thousands of Teamster members like you who were responsible for creating  the union. You are part of a proud, democratic heritage. Your union, Executive  Board, Business Representative, and clerical & office staff are committed  to serving you. Again, welcome to your union, Teamsters Local 688, a union  that is dedicated to "Keeping 688's Members First."
