It Can Make A Difference For You And Your Family.

Teamsters  need a voice in the rough and tumble world of electoral politics. Anti-union  politicians attack health and safety, overtime laws, political activity,  workers' compensation, Social Security and collective bargaining rights.  Teamsters Local 688's Political Education Committee (PEC) members  fight hard to protect the rights of working people and their unions. Committee  members research, interview and endorse pro-union candidates, help pass  worker-friendly legislation, attend rallies, work on campaigns, run voter  education and registration drives and authorize campaign donations. The  Committee helped stare down legislation that would have prevented Teamsters  from political participation, removed overtime provisions for sales drivers,  opened the borders to unsafe Mexican trucks and allowed discrimination  against union members applying for employment. Call Local 688 Political  Director Steve Johnson  at (314)658-5730 for more information.

Active  Rank-And-File Members Help Manage Local 688's Budget.

Rank-and-file  members play a role in every facet of Local 688's operation, including  management of the Union's budget. This is  the type of rank-and-file leadership Local 688 was founded upon: members  making decisions that lead our Union into the future.

Organizing  Helps Build A Stronger Union For All Local 688 Members.

Local 688's Organizing Committee teaches non-union brothers and sisters  the value of being a Teamster. It is is not easy for workers who want  to organize. Companies bombard them with threats and lies about Teamsters.  Local 688 members can make the difference in a tough campaign because  they can dispel company propaganda and explain to workers how being union  helps them in their job each day. Non-union workers must understand how  Teamster representation increases wages and benefits, improves job security  and provides working people the respect and dignity they deserve on the  job. Organizing is their right and our responsibility. Call Organizer
Steve Johnson at (314)658-5730  if you have leads, questions or would like to get involved. The toll free  number is 1(800)466-5688.

Stewards'  Council: Democracy In Action

Eight  Stewards' Council meetings are held each year to help stewards learn about  issues affecting their union. Each meeting includes a State of the Union  report, financial report and political education and organizing project  updates. Providing Local 688's 500 stewards first-hand knowledge of Union  activities and educational opportunities is critical since they are a  direct link to members. The meetings are also a great opportunity for  stewards to network with colleagues from other shops. Non-stewards are  also encouraged to attend. Stewards' Council is held during the following  months: January, February, March, April, May, September, October and November.

It's  More Than A Meeting.

A Union is only as strong as its members, which is why attending membership  meetings is so important. An active, informed and unified membership is  the key to success at the bargaining table. But just don't simply attend  your meetings: participate. Ask questions, give your opinion and  discuss ideas you have to improve your workplace, contract, union, etc.  No one can discuss your concerns better than you can. Skipping membership  meeting means letting someone else make a decision for you. It's more  than a meeting. It's about your future. Check your union bulletin board  or the Missouri Teamster for times and locations. Meetings are  held during the following months: January, March, May, September and November.
